This intensive, one-day course is designed to equip licensed healthcare professionals with the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary for safe and effective peripheral intravenous (IV) cannulation. Offered in both in-person and online formats, the course emphasizes evidence-based techniques in vein assessment, catheter selection, insertion, securement, and complication management.
Participants will receive practical instruction and guided practice in cannulation of the hand, forearm, and antecubital veins. The curriculum also addresses challenging scenarios, such as rolling veins, fragile veins in elderly patients, and edematous limbs. Additional modules include catheter stabilization, line maintenance, flushing, and safe catheter removal.
This course is intended exclusively for licensed and registered healthcare professionals authorized to initiate or manage IV therapy within their clinical scope of practice.
The Advanced IV Cannulation program supports the continuing professional development of licensed and registered healthcare professionals involved in intravenous therapy within their clinical scope of practice.
This intensive one-day course combines theoretical instruction with hands-on training in peripheral IV access—covering vein assessment, catheter selection, insertion techniques, securement, and complication management. The course is led by an experienced Registered Nurse with over 20 years of clinical and teaching experience.
Emphasizing aseptic technique, infection prevention, and patient safety, the program equips participants to perform IV cannulation confidently and competently across diverse healthcare settings.
Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be able to:
• Identify major superficial veins of the upper extremities using anatomical landmarks
• Perform peripheral IV cannulation using advanced techniques for:
– Dorsum of the hand
– Forearm
– Antecubital fossa
• Differentiate between catheter types, brands, and gauge sizes based on clinical indications
• Select appropriate insertion sites and devices through comprehensive patient assessment
• Apply advanced strategies for cannulating difficult veins, including:
– Fragile veins
– Rolling veins
– Tortuous or short veins
– Veins in elderly or edematous patients
– Non-visible or deep veins with poor visualization
• Troubleshoot complications such as infiltration, hematoma, or resistance during insertion
• Perform securement techniques to prevent catheter dislodgement or movement
• Monitor the IV site post-insertion and maintain line integrity
• Remove peripheral IV catheters safely, following clinical best practices
• Adhere to aseptic technique throughout the IV insertion process
• Document IV cannulation accurately and communicate effectively with patients
